The intent of the triplex located at the edge of LA River is to reestablish the lost connections between the neighborhood and LA River’s levee. In order to construct a response to site, several systems were taken into consideration such as winter and summer sun paths, prevailing winds, as well as public and private circulation. In order to provide more public space for recreation and parking, the building was raised off of the ground level. The form was achieved by offsetting and manipulating the neighborhood’s grid. In addition, the formal concept for the project is directly related to the wind and sun paths. The angled walls construct narrow spaces to allow wind to circulate at a higher velocity and to keep the space at a comfortable habitable temperature. In addition, angled walls also act as a sun-shield during the summer and allow more solar heat to radiate into the space during the winter. Since private outdoor space is limited due to the building mass, green roofs are made available for the residents to occupy, where the best view of the LA River is offered.
